Your forklift licence is one of the most important credentials in your working life. If it lapses, you can’t legally operate a forklift until it’s back in order, (unless otherwise permitted by very specific and strict regulatory exemptions). Fortunately, renewing your forklift licence in South Australia is a straightforward process — and since SafeWork SA moved to online renewals, you can now complete most of it without leaving the house.
This guide walks you through exactly how to renew your forklift licence in SA, what happens if it has already expired, and what you should do to make sure you’re genuinely ready to keep operating safely.
How Long Is a Forklift Licence Valid in South Australia?
Forklift licences in South Australia — formally known as High Risk Work Licences (HRWL) — are valid for five years from the date of issue. Your expiry date is printed on the front of your licence card. SafeWork SA will send you a renewal notice via email or SMS approximately 30 days before your licence expires, which is your prompt to begin the process.
Make sure your contact details are up to date with SafeWork SA at all times. If they don’t have your current email or mobile number, you won’t receive that reminder — and it’s your responsibility to ensure your licence stays current regardless of whether you receive a notification.
When Can You Renew Your Forklift Licence in SA?
You can renew your forklift licence up to 30 days before the expiry date shown on your card. SafeWork SA cannot process renewals more than 30 days before your expiry date, so don’t try to get ahead of it too early.
Renewing within this window doesn’t shorten your new five-year period — your next expiry date will be calculated from your current expiry date, not from when you renew.
Don’t wait until the last minute. If your licence expires before you renew, you cannot legally operate a forklift until renewal is processed, (unless otherwise permitted by very specific and strict regulatory exemptions). Additional steps may apply depending on how long it has lapsed.
Safework permits licences to be renewed up to 12 months post expiry date. HOWEVER, you are not permitted to operate a forklift from the date of your expiry until you have renewed your licence!
How to Renew Your Forklift Licence in SA — Step by Step
Here’s the current renewal process as it stands in 2026. SafeWork SA now handles most renewals online through the High Risk Work Licence client portal.
Step 1 — Log In to the SafeWork SA Client Portal
Go to the SafeWork SA website and log in to the High Risk Work Licence client portal. Your login is typically based on your registered postcode — if your current postcode doesn’t work, try a postcode from a previous address and update your details once you’re in. If you’re having trouble accessing the portal, contact SafeWork SA directly on 1300 365 255.
Step 2 — Complete Your Online Renewal
Once logged in, locate your licence in the portal and initiate the renewal. You’ll be asked to make a legal declaration that you have maintained your competencies — SafeWork SA cannot make this declaration on your behalf. Confirm your personal details and contact information are current.
Step 3 — Pay the Renewal Fee
If SafeWork SA has a current photo of you on file and a new photo is not required, you can pay the renewal fee online through the portal. The current renewal fee for a High Risk Work Licence in South Australia is $98 (fees are set by the government and may vary — check the current fee schedule on the SafeWork SA website at the time of renewal).
Important: A new photo is required every 10 years. If you are due for a new photo, you cannot complete the renewal entirely online. Instead, you’ll need to generate an invoice through the portal and take it to a Service SA Customer Service Centre or an Australia Post Photopoint outlet, where a new photo will be taken at the time of payment.
Step 4 — Wait for Your New Licence Card
Once payment is processed, SafeWork SA will mail your new licence card to your registered address. Allow up to eight weeks for processing and postage. While you wait, retain your renewal confirmation or payment receipt as proof that your renewal is in progress — most employers will accept this as evidence that your licence is current.
Can You Renew Your Forklift Licence Online in South Australia?
In most cases, yes. As of 2026, forklift licence renewals in South Australia are initiated online through the SafeWork SA High Risk Work Licence client portal, and if SafeWork SA has a current photo on file, payment can also be completed online.
However, if you are due for a new photo (required every 10 years), you will need to attend a Service SA centre or Australia Post Photopoint to pay in person and have your photo taken. The portal will indicate whether a new photo is required when you log in.
What If Your Forklift Licence Has Already Expired?
It’s important to understand your options if you’ve missed the renewal window, because the rules differ depending on how long your licence has been expired.
Expired But Within 12 Months — You Can Still Renew
If your High Risk Work Licence has expired but it has been less than 12 months since the expiry date, you can still renew through the SafeWork SA portal. The process is largely the same as a standard renewal. You cannot legally operate a forklift while your licence is expired, so attend to this as quickly as possible.
Expired More Than 12 Months — Full Retraining Required
If your forklift licence has been expired for more than 12 months, you will no longer be able to renew it online. Instead, you will need to complete contact an RTO, in most cases you will require forklift training and then will need to sit the SafeWork SA assessment again.
This is a significant consequence, so if your licence has lapsed, don’t delay in sorting it out.
Do You Need to Complete a Refresher or VOC Before Renewing?
A refresher course or Verification of Competency (VOC) is not legally required as part of the HRWL renewal process in South Australia.
That said, there are two important reasons why you might want to complete one around the time of your renewal:
Your employer may require it. Many workplaces have internal policies requiring operators to hold a current VOC specific to the equipment they operate, regardless of whether their HRWL is current. A new employer is very likely to require a VOC before letting you operate their machinery.
You may have been away from forklift operation for a period of time. If you haven’t been operating regularly, a refresher is a practical way to get your skills back to standard before returning to work.
FQT offers forklift refresher and VOC assessments in Adelaide and across South Australia, including on-site assessments at your workplace.
How Much Does Forklift Licence Renewal Cost in SA?
The government fee for renewing a High Risk Work Licence in South Australia is currently approximately $98, paid through the SafeWork SA portal or in person. This fee is set by the government and is subject to change — always check the current schedule when renewing.
If you also choose to complete a refresher or VOC assessment at the time of renewal, this will be an additional cost depending on the provider. For a breakdown of all forklift-related costs in SA, see our guide: How Much Does a Forklift Licence Cost in Adelaide in 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often do I need to renew my forklift licence in SA?
Every five years. SafeWork SA will notify you approximately 30 days before your expiry date — make sure your contact details are current in the portal.
Can I operate a forklift while waiting for my renewed licence card?
Your licence remains legally current until its expiry date, so if you’ve renewed before it expires you’re covered. Keep your payment receipt or renewal confirmation as evidence while you wait for the card. Once the old card expires, you cannot operate until the new card arrives or you have documentation confirming renewal is in progress.
What if I can’t access the SafeWork SA portal?
Contact SafeWork SA directly on 1300 365 255. Make sure your registered postcode is up to date, as this is used to verify your identity in the portal.
Do I need to renew my forklift VOC at the same time as my licence?
VOC assessments are separate from your HRWL renewal. However, many employers require a current VOC, so it’s worth checking your workplace policy when your licence comes up for renewal.
What happens if I operate a forklift with an expired licence?
Operating a forklift without a valid High Risk Work Licence is illegal under the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 (SA) and carries significant penalties for both the operator and the employer.
